If you do not know how to brush your teeth
properly with braces, you could end up with cavities, discoloration of teeth
and infected gums. Having braces is an important orthodontic treatment;
however, it may seem to be an obstruction to normal brushing. Therefore, it is
necessary to understand the proper brushing technique, to maintain good oral
hygiene.
How many times per day should you brush your teeth when you have braces? As many times as you can, preferable after every meal or snack. If you can't brush, swish your mouth with some water to help clear away food particles. Stay away from sugary snacks and sugary drinks.
The following tips will help you brush your
teeth properly, when you have braces on.
It is highly recommended to use a
toothpaste containing fluoride, and avoid any type of whitening pastes.
Brush teeth within five to ten minutes
after you have finished eating anything.
Before brushing, gargle repeatedly and
rinse your mouth to get rid of loose food particles. Also, rinse your brush
thoroughly to remove any particles of food that are left behind from your last
brushing.
Brush in a two-step motion, which is from
top to bottom, and from bottom to top. This motion will dislodge particles
stuck between brackets, and help a great deal in avoiding discoloration of your
teeth.
If you use a regular non-electric
toothbrush, try to find an orthodontic toothbrush. An orthodontic toothbrush is
different from a regular toothbrush, because its bristles are shaped into a "V"
so that they clean braced teeth more efficiently. Orthodontic toothbrushes are
usually not available in local stores, but you can find them on the web at the
DentaKit website and other web retailers. Your orthodontist may also be able to
give you a couple of orthodontic toothbrushes.
You can buy some special dental instruments to do teeth cleaning.
